What is API 5CT
API 5CT is an international specification from the American Petroleum Institute for steel pipe used as casing (wellbore wall protection) and tubing (fluid production conduit). The standard sets requirements for chemistry, mechanical properties, dimensions, and testing so that pipes can maintain well integrity and support safe oil and gas production operations.
Differences between H40, J55, and K55 Grades
- H40 → Basic grade with minimum yield strength 276–552 MPa and minimum tensile strength 414 MPa. Commonly used for shallow depths with low pressure.
- J55 → Higher than H40 with yield strength 379–552 MPa and minimum tensile strength 517 MPa. Widely used for shallow to medium oil/gas wells.
- K55 → Has the same yield strength as J55 (379–552 MPa), but a higher minimum tensile strength of 655 MPa, making it more reliable for higher pressure conditions.
Important note: H40, J55 and K55 have the same phosphorus and sulfur chemical composition; their main differences are tensile strength and field application.
How to Choose the Right Grade
Grade selection for casing/tubing should consider:
- Well depth & operating pressure: H40 for shallow, J55 for medium, K55 for higher pressure.
- Well environment: If H₂S or corrosive conditions are present, consider grades with sour service resistance (e.g., L80, N80, P110).
- Cost efficiency: H40 is more economical, J55 and K55 offer a balance between strength and cost.
- Project specifications & client standards: Ensure the selected grade complies with tender documents and audit requirements.
